American Foxhound

HEIGHT
21-25 inches
WEIGHT
60-70 pounds
LIFE SPAN
11-13 years
Information

American Foxhounds are intelligent but independent. They were bred to work with little guidance, so recall and leash training must be started early. Their high prey drive means they’ll follow their nose without hesitation, making off-leash freedom risky unless in secure areas.

Grooming is minimal thanks to their short, hard coat, but they do shed seasonally. Common health issues include hip dysplasia, ear infections, and thrombocytopathy (a platelet disorder). They’re best suited for rural or suburban homes with active owners who enjoy long walks, hikes, or runs.

Overview

The American Foxhound is one of the earliest American dog breeds, developed from English and French hounds brought to the U.S. in the 17th and 18th centuries. Bred primarily for fox hunting, this lean, long-legged breed was designed for stamina, speed, and scent-trailing over long distances. Closely related to the English Foxhound, the American variety is taller, lighter-boned, and faster.

Although primarily a working dog, the American Foxhound has a kind, even-tempered personality and can adapt well to family life—especially in homes with space to roam. They are gentle, loyal, and usually good with children and other dogs, but they require significant daily exercise and stimulation to stay content.
