Information

Lagottos are intelligent, eager to work, and highly responsive to training. Originally bred to focus and work independently, they do best with owners who provide structure, variety, and purpose.

They are naturally alert but not aggressive, making them reliable watchdogs without being overly vocal. Their joyful energy and gentle nature make them well-suited to families, though early socialization is important to curb shyness or over-attachment.

The coat requires regular grooming to prevent matting but sheds very little, which is ideal for allergy sufferers.

Overview

The Lagotto Romagnolo is a rare and versatile breed originating in the Romagna region of Italy. Historically used as a water retriever, it later became world-renowned for its ability to sniff out truffles, thanks to its sharp nose, focus, and tireless work ethic.

This medium-sized dog is covered in dense, woolly curls that resemble a poodle’s coat—making it one of the most allergy-friendly breeds. Its rustic appearance hides a deeply affectionate, loyal, and people-loving temperament. The Lagotto is playful, highly trainable, and forms strong bonds with its family.

Balanced and responsive, this breed thrives in active households that can offer daily mental stimulation and affection. It is a great match for those seeking a companion that’s as smart as it is sweet.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally healthy, but may be prone to hip dysplasia, neurological conditions like juvenile epilepsy, and rare storage diseases. Regular vet checkups and genetic screening are important.
Grooming
Curly coat must be brushed and trimmed regularly (every 6–8 weeks). Professional grooming recommended. Coat does not shed seasonally but mats easily if neglected.
Exercise
Needs daily mental and physical activity—walks, scent games, agility, or obedience training. Excellent nosework breed. Without stimulation, may develop anxious behaviors.
Training
Very trainable and eager to please. Quick learners that excel in canine sports and scent detection. Positive reinforcement and variety in training keep them engaged.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced, high-quality diet for medium-sized active dogs. Maintain lean muscle and monitor joint health. May benefit from omega-3s for coat and brain function.
