WEIGHT

LIFE SPAN
12-14 years
Information

This breed is a classic hound—determined, independent, and driven by scent. The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen requires early training and consistent recall work, as its hunting instincts can easily override obedience if not managed well.

They are friendly and adaptable but do best in homes that allow for plenty of activity and mental engagement. Without it, they may become noisy, bored, or mischievous. They enjoy being part of a pack—whether human or canine—and dislike being left alone for long periods.

Their rough coat needs weekly brushing and occasional hand-stripping to stay clean and healthy. Ears should be cleaned regularly to prevent infections.

Overview

The Grand Basset Griffon Vendéen (GBGV) is a French scent hound bred to hunt in packs, particularly on difficult terrain. “Grand” refers to size (larger than its Petit cousin), while “Basset” refers to its low-to-the-ground build. Despite its short legs, the GBGV is agile, fast, and built for endurance—not a couch potato.

With its shaggy, weather-resistant coat, long drooping ears, and joyful demeanor, the GBGV has both charm and purpose. It’s independent in the field but affectionate and social at home. Known for being good-natured and tolerant, this breed is excellent with children and other dogs—though it needs proper training due to its natural stubbornness and strong prey drive.

The GBGV thrives in homes that can provide physical activity, structure, and companionship.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Generally robust, but prone to ear infections due to long ears and outdoor activity. Monitor hips, thyroid levels, and weight. Regular vet care and clean ears are essential for long-term well-being.
Grooming
Brush weekly to remove debris and prevent tangles. Hand-strip the coat a few times per year to maintain texture. Trim nails and clean ears frequently.
Exercise
High stamina breed that needs daily walks, playtime, or scent-based games. Off-leash time should only be in secured areas due to their strong tracking instincts.
Training
Intelligent but independent. Use patient, positive reinforcement, especially for recall and leash manners. Start early and be consistent—this is a scent hound with a mind of its own.
Nutrition
Feed a balanced diet suited to medium active breeds. Monitor for weight gain. Divide meals to avoid overeating and keep energy levels steady.
