WEIGHT

LIFE SPAN
10-12 years
Information

Gordon Setters are gentle, devoted, and intelligent dogs with a strong sense of purpose. They are slower to mature than many breeds, which means they retain their playful, bouncy energy well into adulthood—but this also requires patient, consistent training.

Though friendly, Gordons are often reserved with strangers and make excellent watchdogs due to their loyalty and attentiveness. They can be a bit stubborn at times, so training should focus on positive reinforcement and building trust.

Their beautiful coat requires regular grooming, especially to avoid matting in feathered areas. While not as high-strung as some sporting breeds, Gordons need regular exercise to prevent restlessness or boredom.

Overview

The Gordon Setter is the largest and most substantial of the setter breeds, developed in Scotland to locate and hold game birds in rugged terrain. With its rich, silky black-and-tan coat and noble build, the Gordon is both striking in appearance and highly capable in the field.

While bred for endurance and bird hunting, the Gordon Setter is also a deeply affectionate companion. Known for its devotion to family, this breed forms strong bonds and is often described as “velcro-like” with loved ones. It is intelligent, patient, and steady—qualities that make it just as suitable for the home as the hunting grounds.

This breed matures slowly and retains puppy energy for several years, so early training and patience are essential. Gordons thrive in active homes where they can stretch their legs and their minds.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
Gordon Setters are generally sturdy but can be prone to hip dysplasia, bloat, and progressive retinal atrophy. Responsible breeding, early screening, and feeding in smaller portions help reduce risks.
Grooming
Brush several times per week, especially around the ears, chest, legs, and tail to prevent tangles. Trim excess hair from paw pads and check ears regularly for signs of infection.
Exercise
Needs daily walks and opportunities to run or play off-leash in secure areas. Excellent hiking or field companions, Gordons enjoy mentally stimulating activity and light training exercises.
Training
Smart and eager to please, but with an independent streak. Early obedience and consistent reinforcement are key. Socialize young to ensure confidence and good manners with guests or other pets.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality diet suitable for medium to large active breeds. Divide meals to help prevent bloat. Maintain lean muscle through balanced nutrition and regular exercise.
