WEIGHT

LIFE SPAN

Information

German Wirehaired Pointers are intelligent and strong-willed, with a deep drive to work and problem-solve. They need confident, consistent handling and plenty of structured activity. Without adequate exercise or stimulation, they may become destructive or overly vocal.

Training should begin early and focus on impulse control, obedience, and socialization. This breed bonds deeply with its family and can be protective, so positive reinforcement and exposure to new people and places are important.

The wiry coat requires routine maintenance—brushing a few times per week and hand-stripping seasonally. It naturally repels dirt and protects against weather and rough terrain.

Overview

The German Wirehaired Pointer (GWP) is a versatile hunting dog developed in Germany in the late 19th century to work on land and in water. Bred to point, retrieve, and track, this dog combines stamina, intelligence, and independence in one rugged package. Its hallmark is a harsh, weather-resistant wire coat and distinctive facial furnishings—beard and eyebrows—that give it a wise, focused appearance.

While originally created for hunters, the GWP is also a loyal family companion—provided its high physical and mental needs are met. It thrives in active environments and loves having a job, whether it's fieldwork, hiking, or engaging in dog sports.

This breed is confident, alert, and protective, making it both a hardworking gundog and a devoted home guardian.

What to expect

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more.

Health
GWPs are generally healthy but may be prone to hip dysplasia, heart problems, and ear infections due to their active lifestyle. Regular vet checkups, joint monitoring, and ear care are key.
Grooming
Brush 2–3 times weekly to remove debris and manage shedding. Hand-strip the coat seasonally to maintain texture. Clean ears regularly, especially after time in water.
Exercise
This is a high-drive breed that needs vigorous daily exercise. Long walks, runs, fetch, swimming, or advanced training work well. Without a job or outlet, they may become restless or destructive.
Training
Intelligent and independent. Early training and socialization are essential. Use positive reinforcement and be consistent—this breed responds best to structured leadership and varied tasks.
Nutrition
Feed a high-quality, protein-rich diet suited for active medium-to-large breeds. Monitor calories to maintain lean muscle. Provide joint support if working regularly or as the dog ages.
